Painting With Oil Sticks

$55

with Michael Vermette

Calendar Feb 27, 2019 at 6 pm, runs for 7 weeks

Have you ever wanted to paint and draw with your fingers or just avoid using a brush altogether? If so, then this class is for you. Michael will teach you that Pigmented Oil Sticks are direct, highly versatile and offer a quality oil painting experience, with just enough natural wax added to maintain a solid stick form so that it can be used to draw with. He will show you how to safely work with the medium by dipping them into stand oil, linseed oil, alkyd mediums, or resin gels. He will also demonstrate how you can mix them along with tube oils or use them to draw over dried oil paintings.

The class will also explore using blending sticks that are colorless Pigment Oil Sticks that can be worked into a color to increase its transparency or to blend two colors together on the painting. He will demonstrate each week with and particularly show how Pigment Oil Sticks can be manipulated with assorted palette knives until the paint is a buttery consistency, so that it can be brushed or knifed onto the surface. This method can even be used to mix colors on the palette or in the painting.

Students may choose to paint Pigmented Oil Sticks on any substrate suitable for use with traditional tube oil painting, such as canvas, panel or even paper. This course also inspires students to participate through in-class painting assignments that are meant to innovate, demystify and clarify the Pigmented Oil Stick painting processes. Artists will also be encouraged to participate in out-of-class assignments that give opportunities to reinterpret what was learned in class and apply those skills to personal painting ideas at home.

Group critiques will be featured to offer constructive suggestions and provide the artist with a supportive opportunity to develop their powers to represent their work. Participants may choose instructor resources or their own subjects from drawings, experiences from memory, photographs or from direct observation to develop their own painting themes. The course gives technical insight through visual aid presentations of oil stick modern painting movements and artist trends that define mixed media painting today. This course will give the artist a solid base from which to build oil stick painting experiences. Come and experience a new course that develops in you a new appreciation for this very versatile medium.
