French For Beginners Part I

French for Beginners, Part I is comprised of the first seven classes of the Fall Semester of the first year of a 3-year progressive French program with its levels named Essential, Intermediate and Advanced. During this first year of Essential French, students begin to use basic French sounds, words and sentences through a progressive, simple and pleasant approach as they learn to listen, read, write and speak in French from the very first day of class. Topics covered in Part I will include essential French expressions, people, the family and numbers.

To enroll in enrichment classes, participants must be at least 18 years old and not enrolled in school.

French For Beginners Part II

This second part of the beginner’s French program resumes its emphasis on the four language skills of French: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Continue to have fun and to develop your confidence in expressing yourself in French as you do the preparation study at home, and then engage further in meaningful, real-life conversations in the classroom, as well as in listening, reading and writing activities related to the communicating contents of the course’s Book 1: Essential French manual and CDs. Topics to be covered in Part II will be “At home” and “Describing things”. Free online audio-visual flashcards and interactive games and quizzes also provide additional reinforcement for all of the lessons’ topics.

Gardening: Fall Garden Bed Prep

The fall garden is a wonderful place full of promise and opportunity and a great chance to make spring planting easy and efficient. In this workshop, Ivonne Vazquez will show you fall gardening techniques for putting your garden to bed. Be ahead of the season the following spring to give your seeds, seedlings and plants the best opportunity to succeed. Participants will work on a hands-on activity, view a photographic slide show and leave with a schedule of fall and winter gardening activities. Open to all skill levels.

Gardening: Harvesting Seeds

In this class, learn about harvesting, cleaning and storing seeds from your own garden. Develop an understanding of seed types, i.e., heirloom, hybrid, etc., and which seeds are easy to harvest and store; which need extra preparation before storing and the ideal conditions for storing your seeds. Participants will work on a hands-on activity, view a slide show and take away handouts. Open to all skill levels.

Gardening: Planting, Harvesting, and Using Garlic

Creating wonderful dishes using your own garlic, is a feeling (and taste) like no other. Learn:  preparing the garlic bed; how and when to plant your garlic in Maine; which varieties do well in this zone; how to mulch for good winter coverage; how much to water, weed, feed during the growing season; when to harvest and use scapes and why; when to harvest and cure garlic; how to store for home use well into the following year.

In this class you will participate in a hands-on activity (planting garlic cloves), develop an understanding of the garlic planting process and leave with a schedule of garlic bed care to be used year after year. Open to all skill levels. $10 material fee payable to the instructor.

Gentle Restorative Yoga

We offer gentle restorative classes that combine yoga postures, breathing, and meditation. These classes are geared toward students who wish to move at a slower pace. No Yoga experience is required. Gentle Restorative Yoga provides a beautiful way to softly relax the body up and stretch yourself out. Yoga provides the means to bring out the best in each individual. This requires an understanding of a person’s present condition, personal potential, appropriate goals and the means available. As each person is different, these will vary with each individual. No experience necessary. Please bring your own Yoga mat.
